DescriptionWar hats known as jingasa were worn by samurai and foot soldiers during Japan’s Edo and early Meiji periods. Painted with black lacquer on the outside and red lacquer inside, this wooden jingasa is decorated with the fierce image of an eagle, a motif that rose in popularity after Japan opened to Western trade in 1853.On View
