DescriptionThis object is a Tibetan mani stone carved with the Tibetan characters for “om mani padme hum.” It is a Sanskrit mantra which roughly translates to “Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus,” and pertains to Avalokiteśvara, the one who holds the lotus. The mantra can roughly be summarized as a reminder that the tools to purify one’s body, speech, and mind are found within. Its appearance is ubiquitous across Tibet where carved and often painted stones decorate homes, temples, roadsides, and more.
