DescriptionThis shield was made by the Otuho (or Lotuko) people of South Sudan. It is made of buffalo hide that has been bleached to a lighter color than its usual dark brown, but other Otuho shields have reportedly been made from giraffe hide, which natually has a light tan shade. It is rare to find these shields with their ostrich feather pom poms still attached. This unique design element is also found on Otuho brass helmets topped with ostrich feather pom poms (see 2021.7.22 in our collection). On View
