DescriptionThis is a head scarf from the Hainan Province of China, a staple in traditional Li women's attire. Brocade panels of cotton which are often reused or passed through the family make up the edge of the scarf. and are wrapped around the head in a turban style. Designs are mostly geometric with abstract, zoomorphic and ancestral imagery. Both the motifs and styles vary based on the subgroup of the Li, but frog and anthropomorphic motifs are common stylized figurative motifs seen on most textiles, though this headscarf has Hmong characters embroidered.
