DescriptionThis is a small woven headband collected from the island country of Palau and dates back to the 20th century. Weaving was an integral part of Palauan culture as it provided countless utilitarian objects for the community; such as canoe sails, sleeping mats, blankets, clothing and baskets. The intended purpose of weaving was to create a functional object using various fibers, leaves and grasses. However, as different techniques developed the quality of design and aesthetic became an imperative aspect of the practice. Weaving was primarily a women’s skill passed down from mother to daughter. On View
