DescriptionWhile cephalomorphic wooden clubs of various shapes and dimensions were historically made throughout southern and eastern Africa, the stylistic peculiarities of this club’s face—particularly its flatness—indicate that it was made by one of the 120 plus cultural groups inhabiting Tanzania. The metal inlay used in this example form the eyes of the club and decorate the chin of the head and upper part of the shaft. It is unclear exactly what the origin of these pieces of metal are, but they appear to be repurposed, perhaps from tacks or flattened washers. On View
