DescriptionThe textiles of the Miao in Southwest China are appreciated for their exuberant, decorative qualities. Girls learn how to weave and decorate textiles at a young age, as it is considered an essential skill. The quality and skill of one’s weaving and decoration is often a consideration for choosing a potential wife. Miao girls make their own trousseau, and it is likely a blanket or mat such as this was made for such a purpose. If not, it is possible that this blanket was made by a woman at another time out of a need for such a textile. Also possible is that the inset embroidery was part of a different garment or textiles that we repurposed for this textile. In this instance, the border would be originally and added to the panel. On View
