DescriptionThis embroidered hat is unusual as it features varied pastel colors. Such vivid colors are not typically employed in the traditional embroidery of China’s ethnic minority groups. It likely that this hat was created recently for tourist consumption and that traditional methods and designs were combined with the contemporary to make an attractive product. The Li are well-known for weavings created on horizontal ground looms. It is said that the Li’s looms are quite similar to the earliest known Chinese looms. Li embroidery usually features highly stylized geometric human motifs which have been said to be evocative of Indonesian textiles.
