DescriptionScroll weights were used to allow a calligrapher to write on paper without having to hold down the edges or sides of scroll paper with their hands or arms. Weights such as this would be placed at either side of the scroll paper so that the middle portion of the paper was open and available to the calligrapher.Scroll weights were made in various shapes and sizes, including the ruler-like shape of these weights as well as animal forms, and were made of ceramic, ivory, and wood. Wooden weights sometimes were set with inlaid jade, brass, or bronze.
