DescriptionTextiles of the Miao in Southwest China are appreciated by many regions for their exuberant, decorative qualities. The textile, whether it is a jacket, robe, or other source of wear, is known to have a dialogue of the cultural communication embedded within the fabric itself. The topics of communication include various materials of the culture, such as legends and songs. The full traditional costume is intended to be worn during public occasions, especially during large Miao courtship festivals. Typically made by a young woman for herself, it solidifies the wearer’s individuality within her own community during cultural events. On View
