DescriptionThe Liao dynasty was established by the Khitan people of Manchuria after they conquered northern China in the 10th century. The historic European name for China, Cathay, came from this period. Khitan women used hair pins to put their hair in elaborate updos. The pin shown here takes the form of the khakkara, or Buddhist monk’s staff.
